A Glimpse Into the Future

March 4th marked the end of my first full week as a track coach.  After school I found myself doing few things besides schoolwork and I wanted to invest myself into something worthwhile.   I love to run and decided to ask the track coach if they needed any additional coaches.  Coach said we needed someone to help with long distance so I came to the first practice on Monday and really enjoyed it.  It was so nice coming to the track after a long day at school and just enjoying some quality time with some of my worst students.  Sports are great because there was no need to keep the kids seated or quiet.  My job was to push each student to run his hardest and both parties enjoyed it.
The reason why I would ever mention that this is a glimpse of a future is because I believe that eventually, teaching will be just as fun and enjoyable as coaching track currently is.  Obviously during track I need to make sure the guys are working and there aren’t any fights but besides that I enjoy every minute of coaching them and helping them achieve their best.  In the classroom I know that eventually my rules and procedures will iron out but until that time it is still a daily struggle to keep classes working and on task.  Although the difficulties are still ever present I do see progress.  Each class, despite random hiccups, is becoming more disciplined and we are getting more accomplished.
Track is a great reminder of why I am a teacher.  I look forward to each practice to just have a solid hour and a half on the track to mentor and coach kids that don’t know the first thing about track.  Many of them wear their new Jordan’s to run but they equally look forward to getting faster.  Track has provided a glimpse into the future of what teaching will be like and I can’t wait.
