Right now I have three and a half short months left in my first year and I couldn’t be more excited. Sure this year is ok and I’m surviving it but I was just talking with my roommate about the feelings on the last day of school. There have been times throughout the school year when I believe it would’ve never come but my roommate assures me it will. To give some background information my roommate is like me – a skinny white teacher in a predominantly black school but we differ in one area – his classroom is close to perfect.
He was just voted teacher of the year and has been incredibly instrumental in me retaining all sanity throughout the hectic parts of the beginning of the year. One thing we’ve been talking about recently is treating each day like a vacation day and really enjoy each period. Next year I will not be rooming with Chris and instead will have a new roommate – my wife to be. With that being said I think I might extend that vacation theme and do more fun things between now and the end of my second year. Since this is a free write I decided to create a small bucket list of things to do in Mississippi before my two years are up:
· Sleepover at my friend Phil’s house in Indianola on a school night.
· Go fishing in a catfish farm, we talked about that driving back from Oxford this morning and decided we probably could if we gave the owner about $20.
· Go to a Memphis Grizzlies and Ole Miss football game.
· Find Morgan Freeman and Roy Oswalt’s houses, both in Mississippi.
· Purchase a kayak and go somewhere awesome with Chris.
· Go camping in the Ozarks with Jenny.
· Eat dinner at one of my student’s houses.
· Go to Harlow’s Casino (not too exciting).
· Mentor a first year
· Rent a house at Percy Park in Hollandale with Jenny
· Graduate from Ole Miss in two years
· Drive to Atlanta with Jenny to see Charles Stanley preach
· Start a club at Solomon
· Win Teacher of the Year (not necessary but it’s a good goal)
I definitely don’t need to do all those things but maybe if I did half of them I’d count that as a success, as long as graduating from Ole Miss is in there under the ‘things I did’ column.
