It’s currently a Sunday evening and I am enjoying the 4:15 game between the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots. This is such a rare treat because almost every Sunday I have been working from the time I get home from church at noon until the time I go to bed. If I do see any part of the game I’m not really paying attention to the game because I know that in a few hours I’ll be back at school for another long week.
It’s been amazing being at home over this past weekend. I still have another week at home. I’m going to savor ever minute. The purpose of this blog will be to talk about one of my passions outside of teaching – running. I’ve been running ever since I was in middle school. Originally my passion for the sport developed because I wanted to go to the Naval Academy. To get into the Naval Academy you have to be well rounded which typically means playing a variety of sports. I played golf but figured I would run track and cross-country as well. At first running was mandatory but eventually became a daily release for me.
Even though I ran everyday after summer school in Oxford I feel into an awful habit of not running when I arrived in Greenville. Running my own classroom was just too tiring at the beginning of the school year so even though going for a jog would’ve been helpful I just never had enough time. Being home for break has been very helpful to reignite the relationship with running. Today I went down to the Philadelphia Marathon with my girlfriend to watch a few of our college friends run. This is the first time in the past four years I haven’t completed the race. As my friends were wiping the salt off crust off their face and stretching their incredibly sore legs I promised them I’d be back for next year’s race to run it with them. It has definitely been the toughest four months of my life I am sensing things stable out a tad. I think that next year should be even more stable and allow me to train for next years race. Let’s hope I’ll be writing a blog roughly this time next year with incredibly sore legs but an awesome feeling of accomplishment. Everyday during this break I’ve gone for a nice hour long run at my old stomping grounds. It felt great and I’ll do my best to keep running even after this break.
