Scary Movie pt. 2

Thankfully the second episode of myself teaching was a lot less scary than my first.  I honestly didn't even think that my first lesson was all that bad but at the same time there were a ton of areas to work on.  Through a lot of work with my team teacher and picking the brains of other seasoned professionals I learned many strategies that began to show up on film.
One of the biggest weaknesses of my teaching style was that I am glued to the 20’ by 5’ rectangle in front of the white board.  It works OK for our well behaved seventh grade class but when I move down to Greenville next week that wouldn’t fly.  During the second taping I do a markedly better job moving around the room.  This certainly helps with ‘proximity’ aka being physically closer to students limits behavior problems.  In addition it is also easier checking to see whether students understand the material.  One of the great tips I’ve received about movement is just to be completely confident that you know what you are teaching then movement just becomes second nature.  I think I would stand close to the board because I felt like I needed to be visible to the entire class.
As we are about to start our very first year of teaching, there are a few areas I would like to improve in
Being on a completely different level with the students – I repeatedly need to remind myself that I am the student’s boss and not their friend
Write on the board better while looking at the class – Ms. K set the pace for that
       Decisiveness and Confidence
       Movement….still

Summer school just ended about 2 hours ago and I’m certainly looking forward to starting my very first year of teaching.  Even though it will be a challenge unlike anything I’ve experienced before, I am confident that I received an excellent foundation in education through the five weeks of summer school.
